I realized that since the skiing was not really that great, it was barely above freezing, there was snow on the ground, a little ice had built along the edges of the river, there I was, standing in the river fishing. But best of all, I had netted 6 fish in an hour and a half, four of which barely fit in my net with a 22 inch long basket!

Last week I had the opportunity to volunteer with the Division of Wildlife doing a fish count on the Yampa River through the Service (or as some people refer to call it Sarvice) Creek area. The fish population was very healthy and I was told by some there were a lot more and bigger fish than last year when they did this. As you can see from the photos the White Fish, Brown and Rainbow were a size that most anglers would be proud to hook into. So get out there and get your line wet as the fishing this fall on the Yampa has been something special. And with this nice weather you better take advantage because once winter sets in it might be a while before you’re out on the river again. If you are interested in getting involved and volunteering with the DOW or our club, please give us a shout and we’ll see if we can get you hooked up!
