Chuck Lewis S.W.A.

Phase 2 RESTORATION IS UNDERWAY!

As of Sept. 20th, 2007 the second section of the 'Chuck' is being restored. The line of cars have been removed and stream improvements (structure etc) is starting Aug. 14 2006. Now, in 2007 the section upstream (south) of the 14f bridge is being worked on. River cleanup, bank stabilization, pike slough fill in, structure improvments -all are underday!

YVFF is currently raising money on behalf of the Yampa Valley Stream Improvement Charitable Trust (YVSICT) to rehabilitate the Chuck Lewis State Wildlife Area portion of the Yampa river 'upstream' from Steamboat Springs. Information on this area, and progress will be posted here.

Thanks to Streamside Pulbications, authors of Fishng From the 'Boat. $2 of every local fishing guide sold are donated to the YVSICT, and are being used for improvements on the Chuck Lewis SWA. In the 2006 fishing season, over $600 was donated. Nice Job Fishing from the 'Boat!!

A photo album of the Chuck Lewis SWA in summer and winter is being kept by club member Peter Parsons. Here are links to photos of the Chuck Lewis area :

SUMMER:

The Yampa Valley Fly Fishers (YVFF) is raising money for YVSICT to re-habilitate the 'Chuck Lewis' State Wildlife Area'. This is about 3 minutes from my house, so I have a vested interest in this stretch of the Yampa river being cleaned up to become a prime trout fishery! During the 1970's or so, the river in this area had it's banks 'stabilized' by placing old cars in the river and along the banks. The YVSICT will clean it up, removing the cars if they can. They will add structure, and generally make it a great mile or two of Yampa river. I have been down there lately exploring it, and fishing it before it is redone. I think I found the car I learned to drive in.

WINTER:

Update to Chuck Lewis Area. On Nov. 19th, 2003 there was a very cold night (for this time of year!). It was 8 degrees at 8 am. With the river still warm-ish it caused an incredible Hoar Frost along the river bottom. I photographed it about about 8:30am. By 9:30am the sun had hit it, and by 10:30am all this beauty disappeared. This page is a free running slide show.
